Junior Kindergarten

School Readiness & Creative Problem Solving

Our Junior Kindergarten program prepares children for a smooth transition to elementary school. Early literacy, numeracy, STEM concepts, and hands-on projects encourage children to ask "why," build critical thinking and leadership, and grow into academically prepared, socially confident learners.

30 months - 5 years | From Mastery to School Readiness

Junior Kindergarten (JK) / Preschool Curriculum

Continuing our developmental journey, this program takes the strong foundation of toddler independence and elevates it to school readiness, critical thinking, and structured community collaboration, aligning seamlessly with the BC Early Learning Framework.

From Cooperation to Community & Citizenship

Social-Emotional Leadership

The Toddler Foundation

Learning to share, take turns, and manage big emotions with peer redirection.

The JK Step-Up

Focus shifts to leadership, collaborative problem-solving, and conflict resolution. Children practice working in larger project groups, negotiating rules of play independently, and developing deep empathy. We introduce classroom "jobs" and responsibilities, fostering a strong sense of community citizenship and self-regulation necessary for a kindergarten classroom.

From Individual Balance to Sportsmanship

Complex Gross Motor & Team Dynamics

The Toddler Foundation

Running safely, jumping with both feet, and walking on low balance beams.

The JK Step-Up

We transition from fundamental movement skills to complex, multi-step physical coordination and collaborative games. Children learn cooperative sportsmanship through organized games, intricate obstacle courses, yoga for mindfulness, and rhythmic dance. This refines advanced spatial awareness, endurance, and collective teamwork.

From Tool Use to Pencil Mastery

Pre-Writing & Executive Fine Motor

The Toddler Foundation

Strengthening hand muscles by ripping paper, rolling playdough, and using loop scissors.

The JK Step-Up

Direct preparation for kindergarten writing. Children master the proper tripod pencil grasp through intentional activities like complex lacing, intricate origami, using standard safety scissors to cut precise geometric shapes, and practicing pre-writing strokes such as horizontal lines, curves, and waves. This bridges the gap between raw hand strength and controlled, deliberate hand-eye coordination.

From Sentences to Storytellers

Advanced Literacy & Phonological Awareness

The Toddler Foundation

Expanding vocabulary and speaking in full, clear sentences.

The JK Step-Up

Shifting into early literacy and phonics. Children dive into letter-sound recognition, phonological awareness, sight word identification, and structured storytelling. Through daily journaling with drawing and invented spelling, show-and-tell presentations, and dramatic theater play, children learn to express abstract ideas, build complex narratives, and cultivate a lifelong love for reading.

From Categorization to Logical Reasoning

Early STEM & Mathematical Inquiry

The Toddler Foundation

Basic sorting by color or size and simple counting during daily routines.

The JK Step-Up

A comprehensive introduction to play-based STEM: science, technology, engineering, and math. JK students engage in hands-on math concepts like addition and subtraction foundations using loose parts, measuring weight and volume, and data graphing. Science transforms into the scientific method: formulating hypotheses, testing variables through engineering challenges like building stable bridges, and coding basic logic sequences without screens.

From Intentional Design to Multi-Dimensional Art

Multi-Medium Creative Arts

The Toddler Foundation

Driving autonomy through process-based painting and exploring raw textures.

The JK Step-Up

Art becomes multi-dimensional, structured, and deeply expressive. Children blend multiple mediums, combining clay molding, watercolor painting, textiles, and recycled architecture into complex projects. We introduce cultural art history and collaborative mural-making, allowing children to use art as a purposeful language to communicate ideas, stories, and cultural appreciation.

From Active Inquiry to Sustainability

Environmental Stewardship & Eco-Inquiry

The Toddler Foundation

Observing local nature with magnifying glasses and playing actively in outdoor settings.

The JK Step-Up

Children evolve from nature observers into active environmental stewards. Our outdoor classroom involves deeply structured eco-inquiries: studying weather patterns, observing life cycles from planting seeds to harvest, and learning about local BC ecosystems. Children take part in active conservation habits like recycling, composting, and understanding their personal impact on the planet.

From "I Can Do It" to Kindergarten Readiness

Executive Function & Total Autonomy

The Toddler Foundation

Learning basic self-help routines like handwashing, putting on shoes, and toilet training.

The JK Step-Up

Complete mastery of executive function and independence. Children manage their own belongings, navigate complex multi-step transitions smoothly, unpack and pack their own lunch bags, and dress completely independently for outdoor play, managing zippers, buttons, and winter gear. They learn time management through visual schedules, preparing them fully for the structural expectations of the elementary school system.
